We identify & document Indian Pointer Trees and restore significant Indian & early Pioneer trails in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

We create and preserve an interconnecting network of trails and ecosystem study areas to increase awareness of the unique Southern Appalachian Mountains natural, cultural, and historical environment and to provide outdoor recreational opportunities.

The vision for the Mountain Stewards arose in the summer of 2003 when a small group who regularly hiked the Southern Appalachian Mountains region began to feel that what they were experiencing on their hikes should be enjoyed by others. Although many old trails existed, most were not marked and did not show up on any map. And although many of these trails came within close proximity to each other, often they did not connect.

The desire to share the richness of the mountain environment and the need to mark and connect trails in order to make them easily available to others led to the creation of the Coalition of Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, Inc.
